May 23, 2012 | WREX | CHERRY VALLEY (WREX) – The National Transportation Safety Board has released its final report on the 2009 trail derailment that killed one woman in Cherry Valley.
A Canadian National Railway Company freight train derailed just after 8:30 p.m. on June 19, 2009 after hitting a section of track near Mulford and Sandy Hollow Roads that had been washed out due to heavy rains. Nineteen cars carrying denatured fuel ethanol derailed, 13 of which were breached or lost product and ignited. Zoila Tellez, 41, died as she tried to escape her car, which was stopped south of the crossing. Seven other people were injured. Six hundred homes were evacuated within a half mile of the site due to the ethanol leak and resulting fire.
