Dike and levy construction resume near Galena-area derailment site.

March 11, 2015|TH Media| GALENA, Ill. — Dike and levy construction resumed Tuesday around the remains of a fiery train derailment near Galena to prevent pooled crude oil from reaching a slough at the confluence of the Galena and Mississippi rivers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved plans to erect a temporary wall of sheet piling around the site in anticipation of rising river levels due to snow melt. And BNSF Railway is working to protect the derailment site from potentially being inundated by floodwaters, a company spokesman said Tuesday.
