State official: CSX was planning to replace track before Lynchburg derailment


April 30, 2015 | |  CSX was planning to replace a section of its Lynchburg track after a high-tech inspection discovered a defect one day before the downtown derailment, according to a state official.

Massoud Tahamtani, director of the State Corporation Commission’s rail safety division, said the new piece of track was on-site the next day but not yet installed. It was found in the wreckage of the derailment, he said.
