Train derailment in West Springfield; bridge re-opened

November 24, 2015 | WWLP | WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Five train cars derailed just west of the CSX rail yard in West Springfield Tuesday morning, causing the closure of a nearby bridge.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge (commonly referred to as the Strathmore Bridge) between West Springfield and Agawam was closed for hours following the derailment, but was re-opened before 11:00 A.M.

Rob Doolittle, spokesperson for CSX Transportation, told 22News that at around 7:50 Tuesday morning, five cars derailed on a 99-car, three locomotive train, just west of the company’s rail yard in West Springfield. None of the derailed cars were carrying hazardous materials. Doolittle says that two of the five cars were empty, while the other three were carrying lumber, grain, and telephone poles.
