January 27, 2016 | WXOW |Local environmental group CARS (Citizens Acting for Rail Safety) reacted to Tuesday night’s derailment of a Canadian Pacific train near Reno, Minnesota.
Alan Stankevitz, spokesman for the group, issued the following statement on the incident:
Today, once again there has been another derailment along the Mississippi River. Today’s derailment involving a CP train hauling a variety of toxic materials brings to light the potential for serious accidents that can cause disastrous consequences to our communities and environment. If the rail car carrying Sodium Chlorate which is a herbicide had fallen into the river it would have been a serious disaster. This brings to light how so many other hazardous materials besides crude oil and ethanol traverse our area on a daily basis.
