Feds: Operator error caused 2015 BNSF derailment at Alma


December 28, 2017 | La Crosse Tribune| Federal authorities say crew fatigue may have contributed to the derailment of a BNSF freight train that spilled more than 20,000 gallons of ethanol after leaving the tracks last year near Alma, Wis.

The engineer applied the brakes too suddenly, in violation of railroad guidelines, causing 25 cars to jump the tracks as the train bunched up on the morning of Nov. 17, 2015, according to a report released Tuesday by the Federal Railroad Administration.
