Trains collide near Greenwood causing derailment


May 1, 2017 | WTVA |LEFLORE COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) — Trains collided Sunday near Money sending 10 to 12 cars off the tracks and causing a fire.

Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks says the collision was caused by a miscommunication when switching trains.  He adds that weather did not play a role in what happened.

No injuries were reported, but the sheriff says there is damage to the tracks, which will cause delays for Amtrak and others that use the rail line.

The trains were carrying oil, causing the fire that is now out.
